Modern trail cameras can automatically send photos via email using the SMTP protocol. This guide shows you step by step how to properly configure this feature, regardless of your camera model.

What is SMTP?

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is the method your camera uses to send emails with photos or videos to an email address.

What you need before setup

Common SMTP settings (Gmail example)

  • SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
  • Port: 465 (SSL) or 587 (TLS)
  • Email: your_email@gmail.com
  • User: your_email@gmail.com
  • Password: App Password (NOT your regular password)
Google requires the use of an App Password for external devices (such as trail cameras).

Steps to configure in your camera

  1. Insert the SIM card and power on the camera
  2. Access the Email / SMTP Settings menu
  3. Enter the SMTP details
  4. Set the recipient email address (where you want to receive photos)
  5. Save the settings
  6. Use the Test Send function

Full configuration example

  • SMTP: smtp.gmail.com
  • Port: 465
  • SSL: ON
  • User: camera.test@gmail.com
  • Password: xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx
  • To: your_email@gmail.com

Useful tips

Some older cameras do not support modern SSL/TLS — in this case, using an alternative SMTP server is recommended.
